April Benefiel is the Victim Witness Coordinator for the 14th Judicial District in Arkansas; she recently discussed Child Abuse Prevention Month and an upcoming event.
Her main job is to take care of victims and witnesses of violent crimes.
“For Boone County last year they [Grandma’s House] saw 271 kids,” she said. She added that most of those cases do not get reported.
Benefiel said the cases saw a 17% increase during COVID-19.
“This event coming up Thursday night is actually for all victims.” Benefiel said while they focus on child victims, this event will recognize adults as well.
“There’s a lot of domestic violence due to drugs and alcohol,” Benefiel said while discussing reasons for these situations. She added that less than 2% of child victims are lying when they come forth to discuss their abuse.
Law enforcement will be cooking food for the event. The event is on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. on the
