April Ballot to Include Akers Seeking Second Term as Mayor, Tourism Tax Renewal

by: Scott McCaulley

A lengthy Branson Board of Alderman meeting Tuesday included some decisions involving the 2021 April Municipal Election:

At the end of the evening during the report period, Mayor Edd Akers announces that he will run for a second term for Mayor. Akers was elected in 2019 beating out then Mayor Karen Best, who has also announced her intention to run for the position as has Marshall Howden.

Also, Aldermen give initial approval to the renewal of the Tourism Tax to be placed on the ballot next April. The current Tourism Tax is set to expire at the end of next year. Of the funds currently collected from the Tax, around 25% is used for funding marketing for the City while the rest has been used to help finance infrastructure projects needed to upgrade services for increased visitor numbers. The April Ballot Issue would include both the renewal of both the Hotel/Motel and Restaurant portions of the tax as well as giving the city permission to issue bonds to help finance the projects. A Final Reading of the Ordinance putting the issues on the April Ballot will take place at the November 10th Board of Aldermen Meeting.
