H.S. Football: Branson, Hollister Hold On For 1st Wins

by: Scott McCaulley

High School Football Friday night featured Branson and Hollister holding on for their first wins of the season while Forsyth got a big win on the road against a fill-in opponent.

The Pirates and Tigers each were looking for their first victories after two losses to start the season.

In Branson, the Pirates jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead over visiting Carl Junction, a school they had not beat in the six years since the Bulldogs joined the Central Ozark Conference. Touchdown runs by Payton McCormick and Christian Beruman with an interception return for a touchdown by Josiah Hutchinson gave the Pirates their points, but injuries started to mount up in the second half and allowed Carl Junction back in the game, scoring three times in the final quarter and a half with the score to pull them within one coming with just 18 seconds left. The Bulldogs missed the extra point however and the Pirates recovered the onside kick to hold on for the win.

Meanwhile in Hollister, the Tigers quest for a win got a big boost to start the fourth quarter when Layton Morgan hit Konner Hatfield on a 65-yard pass to give the Tigers a 14-6 lead over Seneca who eventually rallied themselves in the game’s final minute to score a touchdown, only to have Hollister’s defense make a stop on the two point conversion giving the Tigers a 14-12 win.

In other action, Forsyth got a 49-13 road win at Clinton, their replacement opponent for Clever, who cancelled their scheduled game with Forsyth Friday night due to a COVID-19 case at Clever Schools,

The other area teams did not fair well Friday night as Reeds Spring fell at Mount Vernon 28-10 while in Arkansas, Harrison loses at Siloam Springs for their first loss of the season, Siloam Springs getting the win 34-14 with Green Forest losing at Cedarville 52-20.
