C of O Baseball Heading to NCCAA World Series

From C of O Sports Information

College of the Ozarks’ Baseball lost to Southwestern Christian University (Okla.) on Thursday in the NCCAA Central Region Championship, 17-7, to finish in second place, but still have more baseball to play.

SCU jumped out quickly in the top of the first by stringing together a trio of singles and capitalizing on the first of six Bobcat errors.  The Eagles continued to pile on in the second and third innings, scoring four and five runs respectively.

Going into the bottom of the third, down 11-0, Brent Shinkle (1-3, run, RBI) and Kobe Hammers (0-4, run) started a Bobcat rally by reaching on back-to-back errors by SCU.  Kyle Abrahamson (2-4, run, RBI) hit a screamer past the shortstop to drive in Shinkle.  A Max Pulley (2-4, run, RBI) single through almost the same spot tacked on another run, while moving Hammers to second.  Next, Jay Kaufman (1-4, run, 2 RBI, 2B) doubled to deep left-center scoring two more Bobcat runs. Another Eagle miscue aided the Bobcats in scoring two additional runs to trim the SCU lead to 11-6 after three frames.

Following a silent fourth for both teams, SCU would score two runs in each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.  Unfortunately, the Bobcats could muster only one additional run.

Despite the loss, the Bobcats earned a trip to the NCCAA World Series, as the top two teams for the Central Region qualified for the tournament.  The NCCAA World Series will be played in Easley, South Carolina, with pool play beginning May 22.  The Bobcats open up as the #7 seed against #2 Bluefield College at 1:00 PM.
