College of the Ozarks’ Bobcat Baseball had another great day on the diamond, as they defeated the No. 1 seed and host school, Southwestern Christian University, 13-3, in eight innings at the NCCAA Central Regional tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla. on Tuesday.
The Bobcats scored 12 runs on 13 hits, 7 walks, and 2 SCU errors. The Eagles managed 8 hits off starter Ozzie Sindland, but only three runners crossed the plate for SCU.
The first inning found the Bobcats in a few tense situations. Eagles’ leadoff hitter Luke Jones drove a double to left field, and Mitchell Bryant singled up the middle, moving Jones to 3rd while he took 2nd on the throw. Manny Lopez singled, but Jones did not advance. Following a pop up to short for the first out of the inning, Bobcat catcher Westin Gann allowed a passed ball. However, Sindland was quick to the plate and tagged out Jones as he attempted to score. With runners on second and third with two out, Sindland walked the next batter to again load the bases, but Bryant was picked off third, and the Eagles went scoreless in the first.
The Bobcats opened the bottom of the inning with Max Pulley reaching base on a dropped popup. Kyle Abrahamson singled, moving Pulley to third, and then stole second. Following a strikeout by Jay Kaufman, Ryan Daggs doubled down the left-field line to score Pulley and Abrahamson, giving the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles came back to score a run in the top of the second, but the Bobcats took advantage of three walks, a pair of bunts, and an Eagles’ error to score one run. Daggs came to the plate with bases loaded and knocked another double, this time to right-center, driving in three more runs.
The Bobcats added one run in the fourth and three in the fifth to stretch their lead to 10-1. Both teams were scoreless in the sixth, but after walking leadoff hitter Parker Henderson in the top of 7, Sindland was relieved by Collan Thrasher. The Eagles proceeded to score two runs in the inning to close the gap to 10-3.
With a seven-run lead heading into the bottom of eight, the Bobcats showed fans they were not quite finished for the day. Abrahamson was hit by a pitch, and Jay Kaufman followed with a double to center, scoring Abrahamson. Bryce Burtless reached on a walk, as did Dawson Nimmo, loading the bases. Zach Visser relieved Adrian Flores on the mound, and was greeted by a double from Westin Gann, scoring Kaufman and Burtless to give the Bobcats a 10-run win in the bottom of the eighth.
Sophomore right-hander Sindland collected the win, going 6 innings, giving up one earned run on four hits. Juan Carlos Gonzalez suffered the loss for the Eagles.
Leading the Bobcats at the plate were: Ryan Daggs (2-2, 5RBI, 2 dbls.), Bryce Burtless (2-2, 2R), Jay Kaufman (2-4, 2R, 1RBI, dbl.), Kyle Abrahamson (1-2, 3 R, 1RBI), Kobe Hammers (1-2, 2R), Westin Gann (2-5, 1R, 2RBI, 2dbls.).
College of the Ozarks entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed and received a first-round bye. Tuesday’s win comes on the heels of a 22-5 victory over Dallas Christian College in the Bobcats’ first tournament game played on Monday afternoon.
C of O will be back in action this afternoon. As the only remaining undefeated team, the Bobcats will take on the winner of the morning game between Southwestern Christian and Randall University. A win for the Bobcats on Wednesday (game time 1:00 PM) will result in the Championship; a loss will result in a re-match on Thursday at 10 AM.
