Stone County authorities are looking for the owners of two abandoned horses.
Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader says deputies were sent to the area of Persimmon Hill, off West State Highway 86 in Stone County, for a report of abandoned horses.
When they arrived they found two horses tied up on short leads in a brushy location. One horse was deceased and the other was very lethargic and would not respond to verbal commands or touch. Deputies relocated the live horse to a location where it would be able to graze and provided water to it.
The State Humane Society sent an investigator and a rescue team to the location the next day.
Authorities attempted to contact the owners of the horses, but could not locate them with the information provided. A search warrant to seize the horses was granted and they were turned over to the Missouri State Humane Society to be taken care of.
A necropsy is being performed on the dead horse to determine a cause of death. The horse that was still alive was taken to a vet to be treated.
The investigation is ongoing and authorities are continuing to attempt to locate and contact the owners.
