Witness Talks About Friday Accident in Harrison

by: Chrystal Blair, Ozarks First

The search continues for a missing couple in Harrison — whose S-U-V was washed into a lake during last weekend’s severe storms.

“But the whole thing lasted about 15 seconds,” said Patrick Thompson, who knew John and Amy Villines and unfortunately, witnessed their tragic accident on Friday, which happened right across the street from his home.

“When the car got right to here, where that indention in the bank is..the front of the car started backing down and it backed all the way down into that corner — and after that you couldn’t see it because of the height of the water,” Thompson said.

The couple went missing after heavy rain and winds caused flashed flooding in the city.

Police say the couple’s S-U-V swept into a flooded creek that flows into Lake Harrison.

“My wife and daughter heard him..somebody yelling. They didn’t know what it was of course,” said Thompson.

The Villines owned a well known lock and key shop in town.

“There’s going to be some mourning and grieving. That’s what I’m praying for..is God touches the mourning and grieving and lifts their spirit…and gives them understanding. …and that they don’t get mad at God, I mean..there’s a plan. We don’t control that,” Thompson said, fighting tears.

“We searched the upper part, numerous times. We’re going back up today. We’re going to do another search,” said Assistant Fire Chief Darrell Pace.

Pace said divers from the Arkansas Game and Fish teams are working with other units in the search.

“Today we got new dogs from Kansas City here today. They’re going to be out on the water in the boats,” Pace said, “John, he’s been around this area for a long time. I’ve known him for many years and stuff. …So, I don’t think they did it intentionally. I think it’s just something that ..you know that wall of water come through there an caught them.”

Pace says they will not give up on their search for the couple.
