POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – School of the Ozarks high school seniors recently returned from the fifth annual cultural trip to Greece and Italy.

The trip spanned from March 15-25. All 20 seniors ventured to new places accompanied by Scott McElvain, assistant to the dean of School of the Ozarks, and wife, Nichole; Amy Martin, assistant professor of humanities, and husband, Steve; Richard Williams, instructor of art, and wife, Janice; and Jerry Martin, instructor of seventh and eighth grades. The students visited numerous ancient ruins and historical art museums and tasted authentic cuisine in cities such as Athens, Rome, Florence, and Venice.

“The week before spring break, our S of O students had the opportunity to ride Silver Dollar City’s latest and greatest roller coaster, Time Traveler, and the following week the seniors experienced another kind of time traveling by crossing the ocean to see firsthand the Old World,” Martin said. “From making new friends, trying to read signs in foreign languages, and climbing the steps of the Acropolis to tasting cuddle fish sauce and getting to know one another better along the way, this trip challenged and changed students by expanding their perspective and understanding of history and humanity.  Returning to American soil, students seemed to have a greater appreciation for the blessing it is to be American.”

The seniors experienced the ancient Grecian Acropolis, heard their voices echo off the walls of the Roman Coliseum, paid their respects to fallen soldiers in the Florence American Military Cemetery, and water taxied through the canals of Venice.

“The senior trip to Greece and Italy was the perfect culmination of classical education, as it brings all we have learned about history, Scripture, and literature together in a 10-day window,” said Abby Usrey, S of O senior.

“Going to a place like Europe teaches you to see everything as beautiful, to see everything as novel,” said Corbyn Snodgrass, S of O senior. “The architecture is otherworldly and entirely new to me. The challenge is bringing that ability to see everything as beautiful and novel back home, to learn how to encounter the mundane as utterly wonderful.”
