Shell Knob Man Injured, Wappapello Man Killed in Crash

PERRYVILLE, Mo. – A man from Shell Knob suffers moderate injuries in a two-vehicle crash in Perry County that also claimed the life of a man from Wappapello, Missouri.

The Missouri Highway Patrol reports on Monday afternoon, 44-year-old Walter Gawrych of Jackson was traveling southbound on Highway 51, six miles north of PCR 942 at 3:49 p.m., when his vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a northbound Peterbilt Semi-Truck being driven by 50-year-old Walter Brotherton. The impact of the crash caused Gawrych’s vehicle to travel off the left side of the roadway and overturn. Brotherton’s vehicle also travelled off the left side of the roadway.

Brotherton was pronounced dead at the scene by Perry County Coroner Bill Bohnert. A passenger in Brotherton’s vehicle, 75-year-old Philip Hendrix of Shell Knob, was transported to Perry County Memorial Hospital to be treated for his moderate injuries.

Gawrych was also transported to Perry County Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. According to the online crash report, neither Brotherton nor Hendrix were wearing their seatbelts.
