NIXA, Mo. – Law enforcement officials in Christian County confirm a body has been recovered from a truck that plunged off a bridge into the James River Wednesday night.

Capt. Jeff Loften tells KOLR10 News divers with the Missouri Highway Patrol found the body late Thursday morning. The truck (corrected) went off the road on Highway 14 near the Delaware Town access during a police chase, and landed in the river.

The Patrol estimates the distance from the bridge to the water is about 100 feet, and the depth of the water at that spot was 10 to 12 feet.

Christian County Sheriff Brad Cole told KOLR10 News the chase began when a deputy attempted to pull over the truck that was speeding. The deputy suspected the truck was also stolen and the driver was intoxicated, Cole said.

Loften said once the body was removed from the scene, a tow truck will lower a cable over the bridge and pull the truck from the water.

The name of the person whose body was recovered has not yet been released.
