BELLEFONTE, Ark. – An apartment complex south of Bellefonte is a total loss following a fire last weekend.

The Valley Spring Fire Department responded to a two-story apartment on Vista Drive south of Bellefonte on Friday at around 2 a.m. Authorities say flames were showing from the roof of the complex upon their arrival.

Firefights worked to safely evacuate families and a dog from the four separate apartments.   According to the report, the lives of a few pets were lost and a woman was hurt. Authorities say the person sustained minor injuries jumping out of a second story window to avoid flames already engulfing the stairwell.

The Red Cross was on scene to help the victims. The Valley Springs Fire Department along with assistance from Harrison, Harmon, and Western Grove Fire Departments battled the blaze while other emergency agencies assisted on scene.

Not only did firefighters battle the flames that night, but they also had to battle against cold temperatures freezing their most valued firefighting resource- water.

According to the Valley Springs Fire Department, they were on scene for more than six hours containing the flames.  Investigators are still unsure as to what caused the fire.
