College of the Ozarks Lady Bobcats defeat Bellevue University Bruins, 91-56

Saturday afternoon, College of the Ozarks’ women’s basketball faced Bellevue University, the host school of the Fairfield Inn & Suites Bruin Classic and claimed a 91-56 victory.

Both teams came out cold with the CofO Lady Bobcats shooting just 31% in the opening quarter to 29% by the Bruins.  The Lady Cats held an 18-11 lead at the close of the first quarter.  Both teams heated up in the second quarter, as CofO raised their shooting percentage to 54% and Belleuve shot 46%.  Lady Bobcat Cass Johnson was perfect from behind the arc (3-3) and tallied 11 points in the first half.  Ozarks took a 39-24 advantage into the break.

The Lady Cats came out cold after halftime, hitting just 6-20 from the field in the third quarter, before proceeding to light it up in the final quarter on 73% shooting (11-15).

For the game, CofO held a distinct rebounding advantage, 43 to 30, including fifteen offensive rebounds.  The Bruins were forced into sixteen turnovers for the game, while CofO committed only eight.  The Lady Cats also had 21 assists on 29 made shots.  Overall, the Cats shot 45% from the field, 54% from the three point line (13-24), and 77% (20-26) from the free-throw line.

Johnson led all scorers with 18 points, going 4-6 from the three-point line.  Kelsie Cleeton finished with another double double recording 16 points and 10  rebounds, while  Shelby Roberts contributed 11.  Abby Oliver and Ashley Forrest both hit three treys off the bench.  Roberts also led the team with four assists, and Cleeton nabbed six steals.

Saturday’s win is the Lady Cats’ 15th victory against only one loss on the season.

College of the Ozarks Bobcats fall to Bellevue University Bruins, 72-68

College of the Ozarks men’s basketball played host Bellevue University on Saturday afternoon in day two of the Bruins Holiday Classic.  Despite a big second half, the Bobcats fell short in their comeback, as Bellevue claimed a 72-68 victory.

The Bobcats had a slow start in the first half, falling behind 14-4 early on.  Despite nine points by both Ethan Davidson and Ryan Burland, as well as a 47.8 field goal shooting percentage, the Cats trailed the Bruins by 15 points, 28-43, headed into the locker room at the half.

The second half found College of the Ozarks draw to within two points (51-53) at the 12:57 mark on an 18-4 run.  However, Bellevue responded with a 10-2 run to take a 10-point lead with 6:56 remaining.  Davidson, Brandt Cochran, and Canyon Smith scored nine points apiece for the Cats, as CofO outscored Bellevue 40-29 in the second half.

The Bobcats led in field goal percentage and three-point shooting percentage, while matching up 34-35 to Bellevue in rebounds, but CofO turnovers proved problematic.  The Bobcats turned the ball over 18 times, resulting in 29 Bruins’ points, while Bellevue committed 11 turnovers resulting in just 13 CofO points.  The Bruins also held an advantage as they hit 21 of 27 attempts at the free-throw line,  while the Cats were 11-16.

On the evening, Davidson once again led the Bobcats in scoring with 18 points and joined Heath Carmichael in bringing down 8 rebounds apiece. Brandt Cochran dished a game-leading six assists while contributing 14 points.  Smith added 11 points.

The loss takes the Bobcats’ season record to 10-5, as Bellevue improves to 9-7.

C of O women’s and men’s teams will host their annual CAM JAM classic on January 2-3, 2018.  The Lady Bobcats will face Philander Smith at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, and the Bobcats will follow at 7:00 pm against Grace Bible College.
