Woman Drowns in Buffalo After Canoe Overturns

HASTY, Ark. – A woman from Conway, Arkansas drowns in the Buffalo National River in Newton County on Sunday.

According to Public Information Officer Caven Clark, a canoe overturned near the Hasty access Sunday afternoon, and one of the occupants of the canoe, Kristen Johnson of Conway, was seen to go underwater, but never resurfaced.

Clark says personnel from the National Park Service, Newton County Sheriff’s Office, North Arkansas Regional Ambulance Service, Harrison Swift Water Rescue Team and the Searcy County Dive Team responded to the incident.

Johnson’s body was recovered later in the evening near the site of the overturned canoe.

Clark says Johnson was between 25 and 30 years old.
