JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The National Weather Service is postponing today’s 1:30 p.m. scheduled Missouri Statewide Tornado Drill due to the potential for severe weather in northeast Missouri later today.

The drill is now being transferred to the prepared backup date of Thursday, March 17th, at 1:30 p.m. The longstanding plan for the tornado drill calls for postponing the drill if there is any risk of severe weather in any part of the state. These efforts are to avoid any possible confusion about whether a severe weather warning is real.

Once Missourians hear the broadcast drill messages or outdoor warning sirens, they should practice seeking shelter. Remember the safest shelter location is in an interior room without windows in the lowest level of a building.

The 41st annual statewide tornado drill is part of Missouri’s Severe Weather Awareness week which runs through Friday, March 18th.
