ROGERS, Ark. – The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission confirms an elk near the Buffalo National River has test positive for chronic wasting disease.
According to Don White, an ecologist at the University of Arkansas, this is the first time an animal in Arkansas has tested positive for the disease.
Officials say a mutli-county chronic wasting disease management zone will be set up, with public meetings to follow.
The state commission’s website says that more than 200 elk harvest in North Arkansas since 1997 have been tested for CWD. Biologist with the state department say they are still unsure of how the disease spread to Arkansas.
