AVA, Mo. – The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a Vanzant man following a reported domestic disturbance this week.

Sheriff Chris Degase says deputies and medical personnel responded to the area of County Road 251 just west of the junction of Highways 76 and 95, after his office received forwarded information from the Texas County 911 office.

Degase says officers found 51-year-old Jerome Massey lying unconscious on the ground with an apparent head wound. After inspection by medics with Cox Ambulance, Massey was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff says an autopsy showed Massey did suffer a head wound, but that injury likely did not result in his death.

Degase says his office is awaiting the results of blood work and toxicology reports to determine the official cause of death.

So far no suspects have been named, and no charges have been filed in connection with the death.
