Firearms Deer Harvest Tops 91,000

thumb_a1f5aed0f7010b8Missouri hunters checked over 91-thousand deer in the opening weekend of the 2014 firearms deer season.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says the top harvest counties were Franklin, Howell and Callaway.

The numbers show a sharp increase over last year, when hunters checked just over 61-thousand deer on the opening weekend.

Locally, hunters checked 611 deer in Taney County, 456 in Stone County, 587 in Christian County, 738 in Barry County, and 982 in Ozark County.

The MDC reports 3 deer hunting accidents over the weekend, including 2 fatality accidents in St. Genevieve and Crawford counties.
