600-pound Bear Killed Near Thayer

thumb_955219b4109ebe1THAYER, Mo. – Missouri Conservations officials report a 600-pound black bear was hit and killed by a semi-truck near the Arkansas state line in Oregon County on Monday morning.

Conservation Agent Paul Veatch says the bear had no tracking device and his department hadn’t come into contact with the animal before the crash. He says it might be the largest bear the department has ever seen and its being studied by a research group in Jefferson City.

The Missouri Department of Conservation estimates approximately 350 bears live in Southern Missouri.

The driver is reportedly uninjured and the truck sustained minor damage.
