According to Sheriff Keith Slape, the hikers were able to use a cell phone to alert authorities in Johnson County, who relayed the coordinates to Newton County.
The hikers reportedly turned the phone off and stayed overnight in their location. Members of the Tri-County Search and Rescue Team responded to the area Friday morning, and were able to find the hikers and get them to safety.
Slape says the group of 4 hikers left the main trail in search for a waterfall. The trail leads to the popular bluff area known as Whitaker Point or Hawksbill Crag.
