Taney County Sheriff Jimmie Russell is refuting a local news story, which is based on information from a real estate blog.
Sheriff Russell issues a press release Tuesday afternoon stating information contained in a KY3 news story is inaccurate. The story says Taney County is ranked number 6 among the most dangerous counties in America to live in, with Greene County ranked number 45. The MOVOTO blog says it based these claims on 2012 crime stats.
Russell says anyone can go to the Missouri State Highway Patrol website and view crime stats for every county in the state. He says Taney County’s 2012 crime stats were lower per capita in every category compared to Greene County.
Russell says it’s clear that MOVOTO.com’s list is “completely false.” He also comments that news agencies should always look at the stats themselves when they are available, and “not believe everything they see on the internet.”
Full press release:
This morning, KY3 News cast reported a story that Taney County, Mo. was ranked #6 and Greene Co., Mo. was ranked #45 of most dangerous counties in America to live in.
KY3 was reporting on information from MOVOTO.com blog which is from a real estate company. MOVOTO states that they were basing this claim on 2012 crime stats on a per capita figure.
You can go to the Missouri State Highway Patrol website and see the 2012 crime stats for every county in Missouri. By doing this you will see that Taney County’s crime stats are lower per capita in every area of the crime stats than Greene Co. yet Taney County is rated #6 and Greene Co. #45.
This should make it clear to anyone that the list provided by MOVOTO.com is completely false. Any news agency should always look at stats themselves, when they are available, and not believe everything they see on the internet.
I have not found any other site that lists Taney County, or any towns in Taney County, as a dangerous place to live.
