ARKANSAS – Arkansas Secretary of State Mark Martin asks the state’s Supreme Court to throw out a lawsuit that aims to block the proposal expanding liquor sales across the state in the November ballot.
Martin’s office certified the measure for the November ballot last month, but Citizens for Local Right allege the state used the wrong deadline for accepting signatures which back the proposal. The group argues the state should have used July 4 as the deadline instead of July 7.
Martin says a 1999 law allows election officials to use the next business day if a deadline falls on a national holiday. The proposal would expand alcohol sales in all 75 counties if approved in the General Election.
