Former Bookkeeper Pleads Guilty in Federal Court

A former employee of Andy Williams Moon River Theatre in Branson pleads guilty to filing a false tax return after embezzling more than 678-thousand dollars from the business.

Fifty-nine-year-old Dawn Cleveringa of Branson was the controller of Andy Williams Moon River Theatre from 1992 to 2008. Her duties included supervising financial transactions, employee payroll and issuing IRS forms to employees.

By pleading guilty this week in federal court, Cleveringa admitted she made unauthorized payments to herself from theater funds in 2007 and 2008. According to prosecutors, Cleveringa did that by manipulating the business’s accounting system.

Cleveringa was prosecuted in state court for embezzlment. The federal charge is related only to the portion of the embezzled income for which she did not pay federal income taxes.

Cleveringa is subject to a sentence of up to three years in federal prison without parole, plus a fine up to 250-thousand dollars and an order of restitution.
