Nixa Police Acquire MRAP Vehicle

thumb_a899cf8a99ce40dNixa Police Department has acquired a mine resistant ambush protected vehicle, or MRAP, from the U-S Department of Defense.

Nixa Police Chief Jimmy Liles says the MRAP was acquired at no cost to his department. He says the bullet-proof vehicle will be used to protect police officers as well as citizens in harm’s way if there is an armed encounter in a workplace, school or public area.

The MRAP is for defensive purposes only and is not equipped with weaponry. Liles says police could have used the MRAP twice over the past 5 years, citing two instances where armed subjects barricaded themselves, resulting in life-threatening situations.

The police chief also says the vehicle will be an asset during times of natural disasters such as tornados, as it can be used to move through debris and rescue victims.
